The Big Switch Off

The copper phone line that traditional phones (ISDN/PSTN) rely on, have been widely used for over a century. With the rate at which technology is developing, these lines are definitely due an update.

In 2017, BT’s subdivision, Openreach, recognised this and launched their ‘Big Switch Off’ initiative.

What does The Big Switch Off entail?

BT are gradually making their way across the UK, on a region-by-region basis, switching copper lines to fibre (a more modern technology).

In many regions, we are already seeing the cessation of new orders on some telephony exchanges, with many already moving to a full fibre service in readiness for the Big Switch Off. And when existing copper lines are switched off in your area, your ISDN and PSTN lines will no longer work.

BT aim to have the whole of the UK network switched over by the 31st of January 2027.

So why should I start preparing now?

As previously mentioned, BT are switching the UK lines over region-by-region. So, although the whole UK won’t be switched until the beginning of 2027, you could be affected before then.

Making the switch now will prevent disruption to your business further down the line. Not only that, but the switch to VoIP is well worth it for the extra functionality it provides to your phone system.

Here are just a few things VoIP could do for you...

it easier for those who travel in their role to stay in touch.

Cut Costs

In many instances, VoIP implementation actually comes out cheaper than traditional phone lines. This
is because it works over your existing internet connection, without relying on having dedicated phone
lines and their associated costs.

Added Features

VoIP phone systems can come with many optional
added features. They can allow you to set up autoattendants, record calls, and integrate with some CRMs to allow Click-to-Dial.
